The TechSurgeons plugin is pretty helpful in protecting your site. It primarily watches for login and spam activities, and allows us to track bad behavior by IP addresses.

When a threshold is reached for bad logins or messages being marked as spam, the IP address responsible for that bad behavior is sent to our  'fun' abuse page where if it's an actual human, they can unblock themselves.

Do note that the plugin does not actually analyze comments for being spammy. That wouldn't be a good use of our limited resources - especially given such wonderful plugins as AntiSpam-Bee and Akismet.

Instead, it lets us take advantage of what they do, in order to reduce the opportunity for bozos to do bozo things.
