Frequently Asked Question

The difference between a WordPress.com site and WordPress.org
Last Updated 4 years ago

The main difference between the two is who is hosting the site, with .org you will take on the responsibility hosting it, (through Techsurgeons) and with wp.com they host it.

With wp.com, by default the domain name will include wordpress.com. It is very basic and has very little customization built in, but any more than just the very basics costs additional money with an upgrade to a premium version.

With wp.org there is more control and flexibility. You can use your own domain name, themes, plugins, and have access to your sites database. Most if not all of the best sites showcased on WordPress are in fact custom wp.org type self hosted sites.
